What you See and What you Get

My wife and I were walking up to the mailbox last night and I looked up at the night sky and remarked how amazing it is that we look up and all we see are some stars – but with a camera you can reveal all sorts of wonderful magic hiding there in plain sight.

Move the image slider back and forth to see the before and after comparison above. The Horse Head is perhaps one of the most famous dark nebulae in the sky but it’s barely visible by eye through a good telescope. But a camera has its own super powers – it can do a long exposure to gather much more light than we can see. The addition of special filters such as one specifically to record the red of ionized hydrogen gas adds even more detail to the image.
