Look What’s Hiding Behind the Stars – Spaghetti Edition

The Spaghetti Nebula is the remains of a supernova that occurred about 40,000 years ago and about 3000 light years away in the constellation Taurus. It’s composed of mostly hydrogen gas but also includes some oxygen. In this image the hydrogen is shown in red and the oxygen is blue-green so it’s pretty close to a natural color image.

The Spaghetti Nebula is large but very faint and is best imaged under the sort of very dark sky we enjoy at Utah Desert Remote Observatories. You can rent imaging time on our telescope or rent a pier to locate your own equipment in our observatory. We’d love to help you get the best possible images of the night sky.
